Enrique Granados: Goyescas – El Pelele ‘Escena Goyesca’ – Allegro de concierto
Garrick Ohlsson (Piano)
Recording: Henry Wood Hall, London (May 31-June 2, 2011) – 64’09
Hyperion # CDA67846 – Booklet in English, French, and German

After winning the Chopin International Piano Competition in 1970, Garrick Ohlsson went on to become one of the greatest interpreters of classical music from the Romantic repertoire. Adding to his eclectic album are creations penned by Enrique Granados (1867-1916) in this superb Hyperion recording.

Granados’ vision for Goyescas was inspired by a visit to The Prado in 1896 which housed a Francisco de Goya special exhibit. The majo and maja, two of Goya’s prominent subjects within his paintings, provided impetus for Granados to create a storyline using a vast array of catchy rhythms and colorful chords. By reading Walter Aaron Clark’s booklet ahead of time will provide a clearer picture of Granados’ intentions.

Garrick Ohlsson hits each note so meticulously it’s as though it’s the only one on the page. Whether displaying the brevity in the Allegro de concierto, the sentimentality of “Coloquio en la reja, duo de amor” or the snappiness of “El fandango de candil”, the attention to detail is carried forth with perfection. Hearing Ohlsson playing the melodious and frivolous opening “Book I Los requiebros” is like diving into a crystal pool of shimmering notes. The remaining contrasting selections demonstrate his exactitude and passionate execution.

Hyperion has captured the essence of Enrique Granados’ vision through the amazing artistry of Garrich Ohlsson. A pristine performance!
