05/01/2010 Sergei Rachmaninoff: Symphony no.2 in e minor, op. 27 London Symphony Orchestra, Valery Gergiev (Conductor)
Recorded at the Barbican, London (September 21-22, 2008) – 60’53
LSO Live 0677 – Booklet in English, French, and German
This is not a particularly distinguished performance or recording. The sonics, which are loudly touted as Hybrid-SACD (high density stereo and surround sound), are ordinary even when played in the surround mode. The performance itself is rather good but not extraordinary. The problem is the enormous sea of other recordings with which it has to compete, including Gergiev’s previous recording with the Kirov Orchestra on Philips, which is superior on all counts.
Better choices are the London Symphony Orchestra’s stirring and uncut version under André Previn for EMI or Leonard Slatkin’s grandiose and haunting rendition with the St. Louis Symphony for VOX, which remains the Hallmark recording of this ever popular symphony.
